Coinbase lists Ripple’s RLUSD across retail and Prime platforms
Coinbase has added Ripple’s RLUSD across retail and institutional platforms, widening its dollar-token lineup while global exchange and collateral access await a later rollout.

Coinbase added Ripple’s dollar stablecoin RLUSD to its retail app, Coinbase Exchange and institutional Prime service on Oct. 28, giving customers in supported regions another token to trade, hold and move across three blockchains. Coinbase’s announcement says deposits and withdrawals are supported on the XRP Ledger, Ethereum and Base, with U.S. dollars convertible into RLUSD at a 1:1 rate. The expansion gives Ripple access to Coinbase’s retail and institutional channels, but its first phase leaves some exchange and collateral features for later.
The listing adds to a stablecoin lineup that has broadened beyond Circle’s USDC. Reuters reported that Coinbase has also added PayPal’s PYUSD and Open USD, a token from a joint venture backed by Visa, Mastercard and Coinbase. Each gives users another dollar-denominated option, but distribution on a large exchange does not by itself establish how much trading or payment activity that option will attract.
What can Coinbase customers do with RLUSD now?
At launch, customers in supported regions can trade and manage RLUSD through Coinbase’s retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime, Ripple said. They can deposit and withdraw the token across XRPL, Base and Ethereum; Ripple says users can also convert supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD at a 1:1 rate. Ripple will provide liquidity on Base to support RLUSD activity there.
The three-network support means the token can move across different blockchain ecosystems, while Coinbase provides access through trading and institutional services. But the announcement does not say that every Coinbase customer or region has access. Coinbase Global Exchange customers are still waiting for availability, including the ability to use RLUSD as collateral. That distinction matters for institutions seeking to deploy an asset within trading or financing arrangements: access to buy and transfer a stablecoin is not the same as access to pledge it as collateral.
How large is RLUSD beside Coinbase’s other dollar tokens?
RLUSD launched in December 2024. Ripple said it had passed $2.4 billion in market capitalization by the time of the Coinbase announcement, while Reuters reported a figure above $2.5 billion based on CoinGecko data. The difference may reflect timing or data sources; both place RLUSD well below the scale implied by a mature, established stablecoin, while showing that it already has a meaningful base before the Coinbase rollout.
Coinbase’s addition makes RLUSD available alongside alternatives that already have a foothold on the platform. USDC was Coinbase’s flagship stablecoin for years, Reuters reported, and PYUSD and Open USD also form part of its expanded selection. The practical differences among them include issuer, blockchain support and where customers can use each token. Ripple describes RLUSD as redeemable for U.S. dollars and backed by dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries and other cash equivalents. That reserve structure is part of its proposition; the exchange listing adds a route to customers, not proof that users will prefer it to the alternatives.
What should traders and institutions watch next?
The next clear milestones are Coinbase Global Exchange availability and the promised collateral feature. Their timing will show when the initial retail and institutional access expands into a broader set of trading uses. Ripple’s Base liquidity provision is another test: the announcement commits support, but not a level of liquidity or trading volume.
For now, the listing changes RLUSD’s distribution more than its design. It places Ripple’s token within Coinbase’s existing trading and custody services, across three networks, while leaving the size of resulting demand to be established. Customers and institutions will be able to judge the shift by whether access broadens, liquidity develops and RLUSD gains activity against the stablecoins already available on the platform.
